Anatomy of the Persian Cat

Standard Persian CFA (The Cat Fanciers’ Association)

“Balance and refinement are the essence of the race, where all the parts form a harmonious whole where there is neither much consideration nor too little in any characteristic.”

The ideal Persian should give the impression of being a well balanced cat, of very heavy bone, of sweet expression, smooth and rounded contours, eyes large, bright and round well separated from each other, big round head, short and wide neck, chest wide, short legs, leafy tail, short but in proportion to the body, contributing to the overall look of the cat.
The long and dense mantle softens the contours of the cat and contributes to the rounded appearance. Fine texture, vaporous and full of life, long throughout the body. The general impression that the Persian cat gives us is that of a medium to large animal, with a robust and solid body, and a very long coat. His facial expression should show us his aristocratic bearing and his majestic nature. More than in the case of any other race, the face of Persian is very variable. It can oscillate between the more traditional and extremely flattened type. The latter are called Peke-face (Peking face) in the US and ultra-Persians in the United Kingdom. The nose is very small, short and raised, that is, wide and with a well-marked stop.

The head is large and round, with small ears with a rounded tip. It is desirable that the head can be inscribed in a square and the ears are placed almost laterally. Round, solid, domed. Implanted on a short and strong neck. Skull wide and round.

Meaning of some terms

Group I: solid and diluted colors (solid and dilute)

The colors can be solid (black, chocolate, red …) or diluted (blue, lilac, cream), turtle shell (combination, mix of indefinite flakes of black or chocolate or lilac … with red or cream ), two-color, three-color (all colors in combination with white in a certain combination, such as VAN, HARLEQUIN, CALICO). But each of the hairs of the cat is the same color from the root to the tip (monochrome) and the coat does not present any drawings.

Group II: Silver, Golden, Shell, Shaded, Smoke

A part of the per of this group of Persian cats is depigmented and another colorful. According to the proportion of these parts the Persians are recognized: Shell, Shaded, and Smoked.

Hair color of Persian cats

They are divided into groups for better understanding:

Persian cats Solid and diluted Unicolors: White, Black, Red, Chocolate, cream, blue, lilac,

Persian cats of various colors:

Bicolor: Strictly speaking (white covers between 30 and 50% of the body); harlequins (white covers between 50 and 75% of the body); they go (all the body is white except the tail and the cap that includes the eyes and the base of the ears). The colors can be black, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, cream, blue turtle, chocolate turtle, lilac turtle.

Tricolor: Combination of 3 colors, one of which is white.

There are federations that call them “particolor”. And to others the “particolor” is the generalized name of the bicolor, tricolors and turtles.

Persian cats with drawings (marks) tabby: (tabby, mottled)

All these combinations can also be found with tabby drawings (mackerel, Blotched and spotted), called “peat”; with smoke coats; and with silver tabby coats (where the base of the hair is silvery white).

The color of the eyes can be, in the case of varieties and harlequin: blue, copper, one eye of each color (“odd-eyed”). For the rest of bicolors, copper color exclusively.

Below you can see the combinations of cats of several common colors that are given:

Classification According to the mantle and its drawings (marks) Tabby

We can find Persian cats with all kinds of colors and drawings that will please any preference. Some of them have been present in this race since the first feline exhibition of beauty and, in fact, since the race exists.

Others have been added gradually over time, and have been the result of innumerable efforts and tests of crosses between different varieties of color. Some are very popular and others are more rare.

The ones that we expose next are the colors and drawings (marks) currently recognized by the FIFE for this breed.

– Tortoise

The turtle shell (or turtle or tortie), is a pattern in which two colors are interspersed, well defined and distributed throughout the body. The varieties of color are: black turtle (black and red), blue turtle (blue and cream), chocolate turtle (chocolate and red), lilac turtle (lilac and cream); the color that appears behind the term “turtle” is the one that corresponds to the base of the hairs. The color of the eyes is copper / intense orange.

The Turtle is a pattern linked to sex, usually linked to females. This means that males with this motive are extremely rare and invariably sterile.

The addition of white turtle zones immediately transforms this pattern and makes it a very attractive and popular tricolor. It is known as turtle and white; in the USA it is called «calico».

– Tabby

There are three types: the brindle (mackerel), the classic (Blotched or veined) and mottled (spotted).

The mackerel tabby consists of fine lines perpendicular to the line of the spine; The Blotched tabby consists of wide dark stripes that form as veins on the flanks, a wing of butterfly on the shoulder, 3 broad stripes that go from the cross to the base of the tail, and rings in tail and legs; The spotted tabby is characterized by rounded spots, regular and well-defined.

– Tortie Tabby (Torbie)

These are tabby cats with a turtle coat. Both parties, the tabby and the turtle, should be clearly visible. The possible colors, indicating the tabby color first, are: black / red, blue / cream, chocolate / red and lilac / cream. In each of these varieties the color of the eyes is copper / orange.

The tabby turtle pattern can also be combined with the white to give place to the turtle shell and white tabby. We can find it in the same colors as the tabby turtle.

– Silver y Golden Tabby

We can also find the tabby pattern in the silver and golden varieties.

In the silver variety, the colors are those described for the tabby pattern including turtle coats; in this case, the base of the hair is silvery white.

In the golden variety only black and blue colors are given on a golden hair base. It is impossible to find any different tonality.

As for the color of the eyes, these may be copper or green for the silver variety, and green or blue for the golden variety.

SILVER

Emerald green eyes that look like makeup, a thick and sumptuous mantle, they are white with a silver tipping 1/3. An elegant and timeless feline and an adorable character.

Coats with Tipping (tipped)

For many people, the many varieties of layers with tipping appreciate in all their splendor in the races of long hair, and especially in the Persian. In the tipping coats, only the tip (tip) of the hair is colored; The base of the hair remains pigmented and is light in color, while the tip has a dark pigmentation that can occur in many colors. There are three levels of tipping according to the proportion of the dark part over the total hair length.

Smoke

It is a pattern of contrasts. Tipping affects 2/3 of the total hair length, and the base is silver (silvery white). The smoke is the darkest of the three varieties of layers with tipping.

When the cat is at rest the color seems uniform, but when it moves, the hairs are separated and you can see the silver-white base. The flanks have a tone that tends to silver (silver). The mask and feet are colored. The front and the tufts of the ears are silver.

 Shaded

In this pattern the tipping (coloring of the tips) extends, unlike smoke, to a third of the length of the hair (that is, not as much as in the case of smoke).

Shell

With this pattern we have some of the most attractive varieties. In all cases, the tipping covers the outermost part of the hair, 1/8 of the total length, so the color is softer than that of the shaded varieties.

One of the most appreciated varieties is:

Persa Shell: It is a silver shell with a white base and has black tips, which gives it a silvery white appearance.

The cameo shell: (sometimes called red chinchilla) has a silvery appearance delicately sprinkled with rose.

It is worth mentioning that for many people the term “chinchilla” is applied broadly to all shaded and shell varieties, both in silver and golden coloration. In U.S.A. They include all these varieties under the terms “silver” and “golden”.

Other beautiful varieties are the cream shell and the blue-cream cameo.

Colourpoint

The colourpoint is a very popular coloring pattern. In the USA it is known as Himalaya. It is the result of crossing the Persian cat with the Siamese. This was done many years ago in many countries: the American Himalayas was created experimentally around 1936.

In all varieties of color, the eyes should be bright blue.
